In this episode I talk with Production Designer Derek Hill. If you don’t know his name that’s one thing but you have definitely seen his work. A career that spans since the early 80’s he’s Set Decorated films such as Silkwood, Trip to Bountiful, Born on the Fourth of July, Ace Ventura:When nature calls. He’s Art Directed films JFK, Any Given Sunday, Three Kings, Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl and has Production Designed tv and films like House, Into the Wild, W., Community, Hatfields and McCoys, Bonnie and Clyde, Southpaw, The Magnificent Seven, All eyes on Me, #Ozark, and #SMILF. He has five Art Directors Guild Nominations and three Emmy noms and he’s currently in New Zealand working on an ABC pilot.
I've had the pleasure of working with Derek briefly on a pilot but we've remained friends for years. I have never worked with anyone like him. I would have to describe him as a Production Designing Producer. Every Production Designer has input in the design of the whole production, Derek's impute is different. Derek has a way of not only production designing the look in every department but also treating these projects like a business. He works very closely with the director to realize the script to screen. Check out his website here.
